“To begin with, there are the easy things to do, things I could do today, for instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Cruising on a river boat in Paris (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there are the things that are a little more important, things that require decisions from me, things that I think if I did them, they would maybe make my life a little easier, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Deciding to throw away a certain number of things I keep without really knowing why (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or, similarly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Organising my bookcase once and for all (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Acquire various domestic appliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or even (\u2026):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Quit smoking (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there are the things that are linked to more profound desires for change. For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. M\u2019habiller d\u2019une fa\u00e7on tout \u00e0 fait diff\u00e9rente. For example, wear ties again. Actually when I say \u2018again\u2019, I think I\u2019ve practically never worn ties in my life but well\u2026 to order a tailor-made three-piece suit with waistcoat\u2026 I mean to see what it would be like if I completely changed my clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A thing I\u2019d really like to do as well is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Go live in a hotel, in Paris. (\u2026) it\u2019s a way of life, that is : while living in Paris, living in a hotel (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or, in a completely opposite area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Go live in the countryside (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or (\u2026):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Go live long enough in a major foreign city, for instance in London, or in Zurich or Rome (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there are the things related to dreams of time and space (\u2026):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. To pass through the intersection of the equator and the International Date Line (\u2026) the Greenwich meridian (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Go beyond the Arctic Circle (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. To live an out of time experience (\u2026) without time, without any reference point in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Take a trip by submarine (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Take a long trip on a ship (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Make an ascent or a trip in a balloon or an airship (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16. Go the the Kerguelen Islands, (\u2026) because of the name, because of the remoteness (\u2026) or, if not the Kerguelens, it could be Tristan da Cunha, that is a name I like a lot, there\u2019s no \u2018e\u2019 in Tristan da Cunha (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17. Travel from Morocco to Timbuktu on camel back in 52 days (\u2026) there is a wall somewhere in the Moroccan south where one can see a poster written \u00ab Timbuktu 52 days \u00bb and little camels (\u2026) it must be exhausting (\u2026) what\u2019s more, if you leave with a secretary, you can dictate the The Charterhouse of Parma since it\u2019s exactly the time it took Stendhal to write The Charterhouse of Parma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the things I\u2019d like to have time to discover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18. I would like to go to Ardennes (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19. I would also like to to Bayreuth, for the festival (\u2026) or to Prague, or to Vienna, or to Prado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20. I would like to drink rum found at the bottom of the sea (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

21. To have time to read (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

22. Travel in dinghies (\u2026) on a barge\u2026 take a trip in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then (\u2026) things I\u2019d like to learn, but that I know I don\u2019t even want to try because it would take too much time (\u2026):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

23. Solve a Rubik\u2019s cube (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

24. To learn how to play the drums. I say drums because I feel it\u2019s a little easier than saxophone\u2026 you know, play jazz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

25. To learn a foreign language. I feel the easiest would be Italian (\u2026) but the goal would be to read Dante in Italian (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

26. To learn the profession of printing (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

27. To paint (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there are things linked to my work as a writer (\u2026) projects (\u2026) that depend on me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

28. To write for young children (\u2026) the ones who can\u2019t read (\u2026) children to whom parents read stories at bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

29. To write a science-fiction novel (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there are other things that don\u2019t depend on me, that depend on demands that could be made on me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

30. I would like to write an adventure film scenario in which you\u2019d see 5000 Kyrgyz people running in the steppe (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

31. To write a real serial novel (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

32. To work with a cartoonist (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

33. To write songs (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s one more thing I\u2019d like to do but I don\u2019t know where it belongs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

34. To plant a tree (\u2026) to watch it grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, there are two things that are impossible today because they involve people who are dead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

35. To get drunk with Malcom Lowry (\u2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

36. To meet Vladimir Nabokov.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
